Is the coupler is supposed to grip the threaded rod?

The name "coupler" suggests that the coupler grips both the shaft of the motor and the threaded rod. Is that correct? (The directions would be clearer if they explained the goal.) In my assembly, the bottom of the coupler seems too large to grip the end of the threaded rod. Before I exert more force to tighten the bolts in the coupler (which is already gripping the shaft of the motor tightly) I'd like to make sure that I need to.

Correct. The coupler needs to rotate the rod so the Z-axis moves up and down. Wrapping the rod in some sort of metal foil or tape was suggested on the forums if it didn't hold securely:
